The Alice Dress

I waited for her train to come in, pushing my hands into the warmth of the marble from the fountain. The sky was one of those paint strips samples of pastel purple only Paris after sunset could procure. I saw the shape of you before you spoke, the tobacco briefcase you had slung behind your shoulder, your hair falling forward, the silver rim of your glasses. We sat for a few moments next to each other before you turned to me.

This is how we are supposed to meet in a storybook, except in the fables the girls are never smiling. You tell me about the ropes of lights climbing over the boat docks on the Seine, the rooms filled with sunlight you rent under the Eiffel Tower.

You ask me, would you like to join us on the river tonight? I shake my head, laughing. I am with others, I say.

Years later, I paint Paris for you. I pull the staples out of the canvas back, my hair pulled back, the dark winter night settled in around me. Your voice floats through the air in these moments, the messages you send and I don’t respond to filling the quiet like the slow drip of a leaking faucet. Your stories about the seashore and the countryside. Your holidays in Spain, the rooms you’ll have me decorate if I want to come.

But all I see is that night. Watching us from the past like the still of an old painting. We sit at the fountain, me, in my cotton dress. You in your work slacks and the motion your hand makes as you push your glasses up your nose.

In California when the sun sets just right, when there’s a lavender strip in the sky, I close my eyes and wonder, from across the world, what it is you are doing tonight.
