Becoming Jane

Becoming Jane

A blog written by your editor in chief regarding being a 25 year old woman with advanced degrees working a job that does not "use" them, having returned to your hometown 10 years after leaving it, whilst attempting to understand what it means (and doesn't mean) to be "a lady" and the relevance of such pursuit.

Starting to Write

At summer writing camp, I wrote a tongue in cheek piece called "Some Things Not To Do Even Though You Can Do Them", which turned into a book project of 10 commandments of what not to do after going through a break up. I also made myself read this for a slam poem reading in one of our classes, and during a public reading. Not only was this not one of my "brainier" pieces, but I thought it was, in a way, one of the most sad, because I had to write it for myself. After making myself make my break up that I had previously only been writing darker pieces about public, I realized if I got over the mundane aspect of my short circuiting brain, there were also probably other aspects of my thought process that people could relate to and feel less alone regarding.

Not the Jane Austen point my life is at.
